Linguistiblog

I now have no idea what led me to Linguistiblog a few weeks back. And I haven't been reading it regularly, because the page often fails to load properly.

But when it does load, it sometimes points to some gems. I like this brief paper on "The Hyperactive Voice" from Speculative Grammarian, which appears to be to linguistics what the Annals of Improbable Research is to other sciences.

Also, a set of brief papers on a language called Moundsbar:

...my previous note on this strange language, published in the journal Quaestio, was in error in almost every respect. Afterthought prompts the conclusion that this was due to my having obtained most of the data by telephone.

Ooh, cool—hadn't seen that. At first quick glance, I rather like this item on usage, quoting the American Heritage Dictionary. (Did you know that Swift vehemently objected to the shortening of "mobile vulgus" to "mob"?) I've never been fond of AHD; their definitions aren't great, and their etymologies aren't detailed enough. But it does look like a good usage essay; I'll have to read the rest of it when I have more time.
