Westercon

Somehow I totally missed the fact that Westercon 60 is happening this coming weekend in San Mateo. (Thanks for pointing that out, Wendy!)

I hadn't intended to attend--but it seems silly to skip a major convention that's less than half an hour from my house.

And this is the first time it's been in the Bay Area (or, indeed, anywhere in Northern California) in twenty years.

And Westercon 50, ten years ago, was where I met both Mary Anne and Cat F, so it's an awfully auspicious sort of convention, and I haven't been back to it since. Oh, wait, no, I think I went to 54, in Portland in 2001; iIrc, that was okay but not great.

I have a housewarming party to attend on Saturday, and I'd been thinking of staying home and writing Sunday; also, I should probably spend some time over the weekend packing for the extended sojourn to Eastern lands that begins on Monday.

Still. Tempting.

Oh, and Tad is GoH, and Jay L is Toastmaster; two more good reasons to attend. Hmm.

I suppose I could attend on Sunday, stay at the con hotel (which is practically right next to SFO) on Sunday night, and then take the hotel shuttle to SFO on Monday morning to catch my flight to Boston. . . .

For information, next year's Westercon is in Las Vegas, and 2009 is all-but-certain to be in the Phoenix area. Also, the convention's pricing is such that if you plan to attend Saturday-Sunday, it's cheaper to just buy a full weekend membership. I'm hosting parties there on Sunday (July 1, Canada Day) for the Montreal in 2009 Worldcon bid and another the following night aimed at anyone going to Worldcon this year.

Thanks, Kevin! Yeah, I was figuring I'd buy a full weekend membership and just use as much of it as I happened to be around for.

I'm not normally enthusiastic enough about Westercon to leave the state for it, even when it's in nearby states; I just figured if it's nearby enough that I can get there from home in half an hour, then I really have no excuse not to go.
