Spies, like us

The obvious thing for the Play Playlist List for The 39 Steps is a song about spies.

There are other, less obvious things, but I think this time I am going with the obvious. Here’s what I have so far:

  • “Contact in Red Square”, Blondie
  • “Get Smart”, Melbourne Ska Orchestra
  • “Hombre Secreto”, The Plugz
  • “James Bond”, The Selecter
  • “(She Was A) Hotel Detective”, They Might Be Giants
  • “Life During Wartime”, Staples Singers
  • “The New James Bond”, Eddie From Ohio
  • “Night Train to Munich”, Mulberry Hawk
  • “Pencil Thin Mustache”, Jimmy Buffett
  • “Peter Gunn Theme”, The Blues Brothers
  • “Private Investigations”, Dire Straits
  • “Russian Spy And I”, The Hunters
  • “Spy”, They Might Be Giants
  • “Watching the Detectives”, Elvis Costello

What am I missing?

That was the last time I spoke with President Trump,

Well, I suppose "Secret Agent Man" is maybe a little too on-the-nose?

Maybe something from Chess? "Nobody's on Nobody's Side"?

Hmm... "Teenage FBI", by Guided by Voices?

Thank you! I thought about Chess, but I don't know the show well enough to pick out a song, and the lyrics seem mostly to be about Cold War tension, not actual spying—but I'll take another look.

And I'm not at all familiar with Guided by Voices, so I'll take a listen to that, too!
