Jed's Interests: Recreation & Hobbies
(Last update (minor): 22 November 1999.)
I'm a dabbler
or, to put it nicely, a dilettante. I don't do serious research, but I'm at least mildly interested in almost everything.
Here are some particular interests at the moment:
- reading, especially science fiction and fantasy
- games of all sorts, but especially roleplaying games
- puns, light verse, and other forms of wordplay
- singing rounds (and no, I don't mean "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
- situation puzzles
- writing fiction and occasionally poetry
my secondary longterm goal is to
become a good and well-known author; toward that end, I've thus far made one
professional fiction sale and one non-professional poetry "sale"
- virtual-world design (my tertiary longterm goal is to design worlds and
VR adventures for a living)
- reading aloud, and listening to
others do so
- juggling
- typography
- user interface design
- linguistics, particularly etymology and phonology
- artificial intelligence
- light physical activity such as bicycling, frisbee, and New Games (though
I'm not terribly athletic)
- theatre tech (I haven't worked a show in years, but someday I hope to go
back to it)
- radio drama and comedy (writing and listening to)
- Aikido, a Japanese quasi-martial art
- electronic books and online document viewers
- occasional dabbling in art (though I'm no artist)
doodling and creating occasional computer-generated
textures. (That one was created using Tom Davis' "swirl" program and cglue(6D);
I have others but they're less interesting.)
