{"id":18437,"date":"2025-01-16T00:48:58","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T08:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/?page_id=18437"},"modified":"2025-11-13T14:50:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T22:50:30","slug":"food-likes-and-dislikes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/about-jed\/food-likes-and-dislikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Food likes and dislikes"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Every so often, someone asks me what foods I do and don\u2019t like, and I usually have a hard time coming up with answers on the spot.<\/p>\r\n<p>So it occurred to me that I could write up a list and post it here, and then just point people to it.<\/p>\r\n<p>I always feel awkward about asking other people to accommodate my food needs and preferences, but some people like to make food and like to accommodate their guests\u2019 needs and preferences. So this document is for such people. This document is not a set of demands or requirements. If you\u2019re not someone who is trying to accommodate my needs and preferences, then this probably isn\u2019t relevant to you.<\/p>\r\n<p>The categories below are in order from won\u2019t-eat to favorite foods. The category boundaries are not absolutely firm. The items within each category are in no particular order.<\/p>\r\n<p>This is not a complete list.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Short version<\/h2>\r\n<p>I don\u2019t eat mammal meat, and I prefer not to eat other kinds of meat, and I don\u2019t like bitter flavors or alcohol. I\u2019m fine with eggs and milk and some kinds of cheese, and I don\u2019t have any allergies that I know of.<\/p>\r\n<p>Longer version follows.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Won\u2019t eat<\/h2>\r\n<p>Some for moral reasons, some for flavor reasons.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n  <li>Mammal meat.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Mollusks: clams, mussels, scallops, snails, octopuses, etc.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Blue cheese, brie, other stinky cheeses.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Goat cheeses.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Caraway seeds.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Licorice, anise, fennel.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Beer.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Most other alcoholic beverages (beyond a sip or two).<\/li>\r\n  <li>Tempeh.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Cilantro (except when its flavor is thoroughly disguised, as in salsa and such).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<h2>Won\u2019t generally eat, but can eat if necessary<\/h2>\r\n<p>Things that I dislike (for flavor reasons), and actively avoid when possible, but that I\u2019ll eat if it\u2019s all that\u2019s available or if it unexpectedly appears in food that\u2019s provided to me.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n  <li>Bitter salad greens, especially raw radicchio. (Arugula is fine; it doesn\u2019t taste bitter to me.)<\/li>\r\n  <li>Other particularly bitter things.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Caramel.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Custard, flan, cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e, etc.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Most tropical fruit: mango, passionfruit, kiwi, guava, lychee, papaya, etc.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Other fruit: grapefruit, pear.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Coffee, coffee-flavored things, caffeinated soda, other caffeinated drinks.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Wonder bread.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Raw fish.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Milk chocolate.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Dark chocolate with more than about 80% cacao.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Seitan.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<h2>Generally prefer not to eat, but will for convenience<\/h2>\r\n<p>Things that I don\u2019t actively dislike, but for various reasons don\u2019t normally choose to eat, but will sometimes eat to avoid (for example) making someone make me a separate meal.<\/p>\r\n<p>(Chicken and turkey and cooked fish are things that were on my happy-to-eat list until sometime in the 2010s or so, and I still occasionally have bites of them, or once in a while entire meals of them, even when it\u2019s not for convenience. But mostly these days I don\u2019t eat them.)<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n  <li>Chicken, turkey.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Cooked fish.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Dark chocolate made with slave labor.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Textured vegetable protein.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Impossible or Beyond fake beef (such as hamburgers).<\/li>\r\n  <li>Peaches with skin on.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<h2>Happy to eat<\/h2>\r\n<p>Things that I actively like eating but that I wouldn\u2019t put on a favorite-foods list.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n  <li>Most vegetarian dishes from the following cuisines: Ethiopian (but not gomen), Indian\/South Asian (but not paneer), Thai, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Most vegetarian pasta dishes, including spaghetti, ravioli, and lasagna.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Fruit: Bananas, plums, pineapple, peaches without skin, rambutan, blueberries.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Eggs, preferably scrambled or over medium.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Most forms of potatoes and sweet potatoes<\/li>\r\n  <li>Bell peppers, preferably green.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Vegetarian chili.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Mushrooms.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Mycoprotein (Quorn etc).<\/li>\r\n  <li>Impossible fake chicken nuggets.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Most veggie burgers, especially Amy\u2019s brand frozen veggie burgers.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Coconut.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Some dried fruit: dried apples, dried apricots, dried (black) figs, raisins, dates, prunes.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Boba.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Peanuts-and-raisins trail mix.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Deep-fried cheese curds.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Very small amounts of mead or tej.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<h2>Particularly like<\/h2>\r\n<p>Favorite foods.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n  <li>Asparagus.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Artichokes.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Avocados. (But not from Mexico, due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com\/2023\/11\/the-wages-of-your-avocados\">cartels<\/a>.)<\/li>\r\n  <li>Bagels. (Plain, sesame, or onion.)<\/li>\r\n  <li>Peanut butter.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Cheddar cheese, preferably made with vegetarian rennet.<\/li>\r\n  <li>70%\u201380% dark chocolate, slavery-free.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Sourdough (from San Francisco Bay Area) or whole wheat bread.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Fruit: Granny Smith apples, mandarins, nectarines, pluots, grapes, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, apricots.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Lentils.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Kik alitcha.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Thick-crust or deep-dish pizza, ideally without toppings other than cheese.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Vegetarian burritos.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Vegetarian hot and sour soup.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Corn on the cob.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Falafel.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Chow fun.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Vegetarian Indian dishes: Tikka masala, samosas, naan, chana masala, dal makhani, sweet lassi (not mango or salty or plain).<\/li>\r\n  <li>Tortilla chips. (But not the very thin kind.)<\/li>\r\n  <li>Fresh tomatoes.<\/li>\r\n  <li>Scallions (green onions).<\/li>\r\n  <li>Garnet yams.
