Sarah braiding hair,<\/p>\r\n
crossing silken strands,<\/p>\r\n
weaving all the threads of burnished gold;<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
gentle, expert hands<\/p>\r\n
moving locks with care.<\/p>\r\n
Suzy thinks of tales that Sarah's told:<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
tales of foreign lands,<\/p>\r\n
heroes who are brave and also bold,<\/p>\r\n
magic in the air,<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
spinning wheels that turn the flax to gold,<\/p>\r\n
outlaw robber bands,<\/p>\r\n
Little Folk so fair...<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
Summer evening air is growing cold.<\/p>\r\n
Wealth beyond compare<\/p>\r\n
waits on desert sands.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
Sarah tugs on hair,<\/p>\r\n
offers Suzy's hand a hand to hold;<\/p>\r\n
smoothing dress, she stands.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
Leaving now, the pair<\/p>\r\n
think of distant lands;<\/p>\r\n
all the stories that may yet unfold.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
I wrote this in the \u201cMetrical Phonology of Poetry\u201d linguistics seminar at Swarthmore. Wanted to play with a braiding rhyme scheme, decided to make the form fit the content. The original version had all lines the same length, but a couple of lines were a little squished in that form.
