Cool beans.

The party on Saturday was nice. A couple dozen people showed up, some with kids; there was food, and chat, and juggling, and warm weather. Thanks to all who came!

Sunday night, leaving the apartment to go out to dinner, I neglected to check my pocket for my keys. For the past five years, almost every time I've left the apartment I've checked my pocket and made sure I had my keys, but this once I wasn't paying attention, and this once was when my keys were sitting on the table just inside the door. (How they got there is a long story, but basically has to do with my unjustified paranoia about another key possibly not working.) The emergency contact number for my (off-site) apartment managers was written on a piece of paper carefully posted by my telephone, but wasn't in my Palm. It's not a number that any of my neighbors would be likely to have, I think, though I should (as Mary Anne suggested at the time) have tried asking them. Kam, the only person who had another key, was in Santa Cruz and wouldn't be returning 'til Monday. So M and I went to dinner (using the plastic copy of my car key that I had made at AAA years ago, and which has saved me on half a dozen occasions over the years), and hung out in a bookstore for a while, and came home to meet up with a locksmith, who took 30 seconds to pop the door open and collected a remarkably large fee in exchange. The most interesting thing there, to me, was just how easy it was to pick my lock. Remind me not to leave valuables lying around my apartment.

On Monday, short on sleep, I voted for Hugos, using the online form, with a few hours to spare. Made a couple of other deadlines, barely, on Sunday and Monday. (At least, I think I made the Sunday one; I don't know for sure.)

Came home tonight to find a message on my answering machine from my uncle, letting me know that my grandmother fell and broke some bones and is in the hospital. Ugh. Sounds like she's pretty much okay, though. Will call her tomorrow.

Have been reading Connie Willis's 1994 collection Impossible Things, though I've read half the stories before. Highlights of the new-to-me ones so far: "Time Out," "Chance," and especially "Winter's Tale," the Shakespeare story that never uses the name "Shakespeare."

The last of the CDs I recently ordered arrived today. I think I'll pause for a while in my music purchases; I haven't listened to half the CDs I've purchased in the past couple months.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I'd polished a story and submitted it; I seem to have neglected to mention that around the same time I also submitted a silly little piece to Analog's "Probability Zero" section. I have no idea whether it's a good match, but it's probably the only thing I'm ever likely to write that would make sense to send to Analog, so what the hell.

I recently commented in an entry that "if [someone's] not fretting about something trivial, he's probably not Jed." A friend who knows many more Jeds than I (six or seven, I think) noted in response that in fact this sort of fretting behavior is characteristic only of some Jeds. So perhaps I ought to have provided a more specific identifier. In only vaguely related news, I discovered today that six people named Jed have attended Swarthmore at various times since 1964, but no two of us have ever overlapped. Coincidence? I think not!

Okay, enough from me. I think I have just enough time and awakeness to get through one more submission tonight before I go to sleep.

All sorts of things I haven’t mentioned: Friday I got an interesting unintentional birthday present: my apartment-complex manager sent me…

[1

post-1032","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
