It happens every two years; this year it's in Chicago, at a hotel near O'Hare. Today's keynote speaker is Dorothy Allison, but I'm afraid by the time you read this it will be too late to see her.

For more information, see the Collective's mission statement.

I knew about butch and femme as descriptions of gender presentation (and/or gender performance? I'm a little unclear on this latter term), but apparently in some circles and contexts, Femme has become a political identity and/or a gender identity. Interesting stuff.

Also of potential interest: the Femme Shark Manifesto. I don't know enough about this to know exactly how it fits into the Femme community and identity.

More generally, I don't know enough about any of the above; Mary Anne introduced me to it in a phone call yesterday, so this is all still new to me. So I apologize if I got anything wrong here, and I recommend that those of you who are similarly new to these ideas go spend some time reading up on them before you comment.

Mary Anne is attending an interesting-sounding conference this weekend: Femme2008, a queer Femme conference run by the Femme Collective.
