Here's the deal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tim Burton wrote the story for, and was a producer for, <cite><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0107688\/\">The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/a><\/cite>. Henry Selick directed that movie, but lots of people think it was Burton.<\/li>\n<li>Tim Burton was a producer for <cite><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116683\/\">James and the Giant Peach<\/a><\/cite>, which has much the same animation style as <cite>Nightmare<\/cite> and <cite>Coraline<\/cite>. Henry Selick directed <cite>Giant Peach<\/cite>, but again I think a lot of people assumed it was Burton. (Neither of them wrote this one.)<\/li>\n<li>Tim Burton has writing, directing, and producing credits for <cite><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0121164\/\">Corpse Bride<\/a><\/cite>, which again had (I gather) a similar animation style. (And featured perennial Burton favorite Johnny Depp; also Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, Tracey Ullman, et alia. Maybe I should watch it.)<\/li>\n<li>The <cite>Coraline<\/cite> publicity said that it was \"from the director of <cite>The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/cite>,\" which led a lot of people to think <cite>Coraline<\/cite> was directed by Burton.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><cite>Coraline<\/cite> was in fact written, directed, and executive-produced by Henry Selick.
