{"id":12350,"date":"2009-09-01T10:41:16","date_gmt":"2009-09-01T17:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2009\/09\/01\/12350.html"},"modified":"2009-09-01T10:41:16","modified_gmt":"2009-09-01T17:41:16","slug":"same-sex-marriages-begin-in-ve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2009\/09\/01\/same-sex-marriages-begin-in-ve\/","title":{"rendered":"Same-sex marriages begin in Vermont"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Back in April, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2009\/04\/07\/11997.html\">Vermont's legislature passed<\/a> (and then overrode a veto of) a law recognizing same-sex marriages, starting September 1.<\/p>\n<p>That's today!<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5grllk_nt63q2NPIotyM9xpL4hwkwD9AEICK00\">first couples to be wed under the new law<\/a> tied the knot a few minutes after midnight last night.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently there has not (so far) been a big rush of same-sex couples scheduling weddings in Vermont. An article I saw the other day speculated that the proximity of Massachusetts and Connecticut mean that a lot of same-sex couple in the region may have already gotten married elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I'm pleased. Congratulations to the newlyweds, and to those who plan to marry in Vermont sometime soon!<\/p>\n<p>[Added later: Forgot to mention that Ben &amp; Jerry's is celebrating by changing the name of their Chubby Hubby flavor to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benjerry.com\/hubbyhubby\/\">Hubby Hubby<\/a> for the month of September.
