{"id":12477,"date":"2009-10-21T20:31:10","date_gmt":"2009-10-22T03:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2009\/10\/21\/12477.html"},"modified":"2009-10-21T20:31:10","modified_gmt":"2009-10-22T03:31:10","slug":"how-you-can-help-in-maine-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2009\/10\/21\/how-you-can-help-in-maine-and\/","title":{"rendered":"How you can help in Maine and Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tacit Hydra posted a compelling <a href=\"http:\/\/tacithydra.livejournal.com\/85466.html\">call-to-action<\/a> the other day, about phone banking to support marriage equality in Maine and domestic partnerships in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>You can call from anywhere in the US, and I gather that most calls are to supporters of equality who just need a little nudge to remind them to go vote.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of bits from TH's entry:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The fantastic thing about phoning from home is that you are not going into battle&mdash;remember, you are not a warrior, but a scout, a messenger.<\/p>\n<p>[...] it is turnout that will determine both these ballot battles.<\/p>\n<p>[...] If Washington wins, the entire west coast of the U.S. will have marriage-like rights for its citizens. If Maine wins, it will be the first time in U.S. history that equal marriage has been defended at the polls.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She also notes that, if nothing else, people need to be given important and useful information, such as: \"to support equality, should they vote YES or NO on the proposition? In Washington it's YES; in Maine it's NO.\"<\/p>\n<p>If you're not up for phoning, you can of course still donate money, or help spread the word.  When I was in Washington a couple weeks ago, half of my relatives had never heard of Ref. 71.<\/p>\n<p>In both states, the latest polls I've seen have shown just barely over 50% favoring equality.  It's going to be close.
