Kam and I went to get tickets to see L'Auberge Espagnole<\/cite> last night, but the people at the theatre where it was showing told us that the air conditioning wasn't working. Since part of the point of seeing a movie had been to go somewhere air-conditioned, that was less than ideal. Instead, we stopped by her parents' place (which, btw, is now for sale; if any of you have a couple million dollars lying around and are looking for a fabulous house in Palo Alto, you should stop by the open house tomorrow) and then stopped by my place, and then decided that we'd stop by the theatre where Charlie's Angels<\/cite> (by which I mean the second Charlie's Angels<\/cite> movie, the one that just opened) was showing. It was 20 minutes 'til the last showing of the night when we left my place, and it was opening night, and a Friday, and still hot enough for air conditioning to be a plus, so we figured we would drive past, look sadly at the \"sold out\" sign, and go hang out in a bookstore.<\/p>\n

Miraculously, though, the theatre was only half-full. We got seats in the center section, maybe 10 rows back from the front of the theatre.<\/p>\n

The movie itself (the Charlie's Angels<\/cite> sequel, not L'Auberge Espagnole<\/cite>) was just plain fun. I liked the first one because it went over the top and just kept on going; I liked this one because it knew precisely how kitschy it could be without going too far. Not a brilliant work of cinematic art, but a heck of a lot of fun. I suspect I would've enjoyed it even more if I'd ever seen the original TV series.<\/p>\n

There was a great interview a couple weeks ago with the three leads in one of the major pop-culture magazines (Newsweek,<\/cite> maybe?) that I keep meaning to quote here; a bunch of funny lines. Mostly, both the interview and the movie itself give the strong impression that the entire cast and crew were enjoying themselves tremendously.<\/p>\n

The movie certainly has flaws, a couple of them reasonably serious. But I found that they didn't bother me, 'cause I too was having a good time.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
