I see no reason not to use a journal as, among other things, a commonplace book.<\/p>\n

So I'll quote two lines from Le Guin that I particularly like. First, from her Foreword to The Birthday of the World and Other Stories:<\/cite><\/p>\n

To create difference—to establish strangeness—then to let the fiery arc of human emotion leap and close the gap: this acrobatics of the imagination fascinates and satisfies me as no other.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I think that's as good a description as I've seen of what I love so much about her best work.<\/p>\n

Second, from one of the stories here, \"Solitude\":<\/p>\n
