{"id":12843,"date":"2010-03-03T00:56:50","date_gmt":"2010-03-03T08:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2010\/03\/03\/12843.html"},"modified":"2010-03-03T00:56:50","modified_gmt":"2010-03-03T08:56:50","slug":"yay-for-washington-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2010\/03\/03\/yay-for-washington-dc\/","title":{"rendered":"Yay for Washington, DC!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A day or two ago, after the US Congress declined to do anything to stop marriage equality in the District, same-sex marriage opponents made a last-ditch attempt: they asked the US Supreme Court to step in and send the matter to a popular vote.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Justice Roberts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/02\/AR2010030201811.html\">responded<\/a> with a three-page opinion in which he said that now is not yet the right time to appeal to SCOTUS. At some future point, after a lower court ruling, the Supremes may yet get involved, but not right now.<\/p>\n<p>Which means that, starting in about four and a half hours, same-sex couples can <a href=\"http:\/\/dcist.com\/2010\/03\/all_systems_go_for_gay_marriage_app.php\">apply for marriage licenses<\/a> in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>Those couples who apply today will be able to obtain marriage licenses on Tuesday, March 9, assuming all goes well.<\/p>\n<p>Exciting!
