{"id":13347,"date":"2010-10-15T13:04:30","date_gmt":"2010-10-15T20:04:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2010\/10\/15\/13347.html"},"modified":"2010-10-15T13:04:30","modified_gmt":"2010-10-15T20:04:30","slug":"who-takes-simultaneous-subs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2010\/10\/15\/who-takes-simultaneous-subs\/","title":{"rendered":"Who takes simultaneous submissions?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Yet another author just sent us an annoyed note about how awful we are for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strangehorizons.com\/fiction-info\/2010\/05\/dont_send_us_si.shtml\">not taking simultaneous submissions<\/a>. In the note, the author claimed that we're one of the very few magazines that still adheres to that antiquated approach.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that wasn't true, but I thought it might be interesting to check up on the current state of the field in this regard. And I was actually a little surprised by what I found.<\/p>\n<p>The unsurprising part is that, of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfwa.org\/join-us\/sfwa-membership-requirements\/#shortfiction\">SFWA-qualifying short fiction venues<\/a>, most that make a statement on the issue continue to explicitly disallow simsubs, including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Analog<\/li>\n  <li>Apex<\/li>\n  <li>Asimov's<\/li>\n  <li>Clarkesworld<\/li>\n  <li>Dark Wisdom<\/li>\n  <li>Dragon<\/li>\n  <li>Fantasy Magazine<\/li>\n  <li>Flash Fiction Online<\/li>\n  <li>F&SF<\/li>\n  <li>Realms of Fantasy<\/li>\n  <li>Strange Horizons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The surprising part, to me, is that there are venues <em>do<\/em> explicitly allow simsubs&mdash;though even these allow them only if the author marks them as simsubs (which most simsubbing authors, in my experience, don't):<\/p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Beneath Ceaseless Skies<\/li>\n  <li>Chizine<\/li>\n  <li>Pedestal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The other venues on the SFWA list either don't explicitly say whether they take simsubs or not, or don't have submission guidelines anywhere I can easily find them.<\/p>\n<p>However, it's traditionally been true that the default in the sf short-fiction world is to not allow simsubs unless the guidelines explicitly state that they're allowed. So I would assume that all the venues that don't explicitly allow them won't consider them.<\/p>\n<p>So although I was wrong in thinking that <em>no<\/em> professional sf magazines take simsubs, I was right that there aren't many that explicitly allow them.<\/p>\n<p>PS: Before you post a comment telling me that we should start taking simsubs, please read the abovelinked explanation of why we don't.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yet another author just sent us an annoyed note about how awful we are for not taking simultaneous submissions.
