Heartfelt and compelling. (9 min) (via Shmuel)<\/p>\n<p>Second, an excellent new <a href=\"http:\/\/content.usatoday.com\/communities\/onpolitics\/post\/2010\/11\/cindy-mccain-john-mccain-gays-in-military-\/1\">NoH8 video<\/a> (2&frac12; min), featuring a bunch of celebrities talking about how our homophobic culture implicitly supports bullying.<\/p>\n<p>And a certain bit of that video is especially compelling to me not just for what it says but for who says it. These lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future [.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.] They can't serve our country openly. [.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.] Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>are spoken by none other than Cindy McCain, John McCain's wife.<\/p>\n<p>She has spoken out before in favor of marriage equality, and she's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/blogs\/nov05election\/detail?entry_id=55696\">previously participated in a NoH8 ad<\/a>, but this is the first time I've seen her explicitly criticize the US government for its handling of LGBT issues. I'm very pleased.<\/p>\n<p>(Her husband, btw, says he &ldquo;respects the views of members of his family but remains opposed to gay marriage.&rdquo; I gather that was from a statement in response to her first NoH8 ad; I'm not sure whether he's responded publicly to this new video.)<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First, an It Gets Better video from some gay Orthodox Jewish guys.
