{"id":14183,"date":"2012-08-27T12:10:40","date_gmt":"2012-08-27T19:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2012\/08\/27\/14183.html"},"modified":"2012-08-27T12:10:40","modified_gmt":"2012-08-27T19:10:40","slug":"15-yearses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2012\/08\/27\/15-yearses\/","title":{"rendered":"How the years go by"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It occurred to me Sunday evening that it's been fifteen years (plus a week) since the end of my <a href=\"http:\/\/kith.org\/logos\/wander\/\">Wanderjahr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Which means that I neglected to mark the fifteenth anniversary of various notable occasions. In particular, the Fourth of July this year was the fifteenth anniversary of my <a href=\"http:\/\/kith.org\/logos\/wander\/11.wa\/week46.html\">meeting<\/a> both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2009\/07\/04\/12198.html\">Mary Anne<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/catsittingstill.dreamwidth.org\">Cat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I also noticed that I finished reading Ondaatje's <cite>The English Patient<\/cite> the week I met Mary Anne. Coincidence? (I had no idea he was Sri Lankan at the time.)<\/p>\n<p>That year was also when I started my <a href=\"http:\/\/kith.org\/logos\/words\/\">Words &amp; Stuff<\/a> column. And it was the year when I got back in touch with <a href=\"http:\/\/kith.org\/alex\/\">Alex<\/a>&mdash;and a few months later it became the year of his first suicide attempt.<\/p>\n<p>On skimming through various Wanderjahr entries, I think that year was also the last time I saw various people who I've since lost touch with: Cathy P, Carrie M, Karen K. (That's Swarthmore Karen K, not Palo Alto Karen K.)<\/p>\n<p>A lot of changes that year, and a lot of stuff that influenced my later life. Even more so than the usual ways that experiences echo through and shape our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it's time for another Wanderjahr. &mdash;No, no, I'm joking, I don't need any more big changes in my life in the near future.
