The closest any of them came to saying what the sanctions <em>are<\/em> is a couple of brief indications that the individuals\u2019 financial assets (one article said in the US, another said in US dollars) are being frozen, and that they can\u2019t travel to the US, and that Americans are forbidden to do business with them. (I\u2019m not certain of that last point\u2014I now can\u2019t find the one article where I read it, and I may have misread or misremembered.)<\/p>\r\n<p>Which is all well and good, but two of the organizations sanctioned are official Russian intelligence agencies (the Federal Security Service and the Main Intelligence Directorate). How do you freeze the assets of an intelligence agency? How do you keep them traveling to the US? How do you forbid Americans to do business with one? Aren\u2019t its assets and travel and business deals likely to be secret?<\/p>\r\n<p>Even the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sm0312\">official Treasury announcement<\/a>, which has a detailed list of who\u2019s being sanctioned and why, doesn\u2019t seem to say what the sanctions are.<\/p>\r\n<p>The information may be in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov\/resource-center\/sanctions\/Programs\/Pages\/caatsa.aspx\">CAATSA<\/a>, the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, but the full text of CAATSA appears to be a 70-page PDF, and I\u2019m having a hard time following\/parsing it well enough to understand what specific measures might be relevant to the current situation.<\/p>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[45],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-17093","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17093","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=17093"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17093\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":17096,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/17093\/revisions\/17096"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=17093"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=17093"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=17093"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
