Here\u2019s my traditional spring quotation of Swinburne:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<div class=\"stanza\">\r\n<p>For winter\u2019s rains and ruins are over,<\/p>\r\n<p>And all the season of snows and sins;<\/p>\r\n<p>The days dividing lover and lover,<\/p>\r\n<p>The light that loses, the night that wins;<\/p>\r\n<p>And time remember\u2019d is grief forgotten,<\/p>\r\n<p>And frosts are slain and flowers begotten,<\/p>\r\n<p>And in green underwood and cover<\/p>\r\n<p>Blossom by blossom the spring begins.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p>\u2014Algernon Charles Swinburne, from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Atalanta_in_Calydon\/Text\">Atalanta in Calydon<\/a>\u201d (1865)<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\u2026I recently read the entirety of that poem for the first time (after many years of loving and quoting the above bit), and learned that there\u2019s a lot more that\u2019s distressing in it than I had previously thought. Most of the poem is in no way a celebration of spring.
