{"id":2009,"date":"2004-05-08T12:49:14","date_gmt":"2004-05-08T19:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2004\/05\/08\/2009.html"},"modified":"2004-05-08T12:49:14","modified_gmt":"2004-05-08T19:49:14","slug":"birth-and-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2004\/05\/08\/birth-and-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth and death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This morning when I checked email, I found two pieces of news:<\/p>\n<p>An elementary-school and junior-high-school friend who I haven't seen in over twenty years, but who got back in touch with me by email a couple years ago, sent me a birth announcement: a healthy baby girl, born this past Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>And then, just a couple messages later, a college friend (Geoff H., for those who know him) let me know that his mother died this morning.  She'd been diagnosed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alsa.org\/als\/quickfacts.cfm\">ALS<\/a> about a year ago, and everyone knew she didn't have much time left; she'd already lasted longer than the doctors expected.  I feel lucky to have known her, though I didn't know her well; she was really wonderful.  And I'm glad to have had the chance to say goodbye to her two weeks ago, painful and difficult as it was.<\/p>\n<p>.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.
