{"id":20127,"date":"2023-08-04T14:52:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T21:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/?p=20127"},"modified":"2023-08-04T14:52:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T21:52:58","slug":"one-man-shall-mow-my-meadow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2023\/08\/04\/one-man-shall-mow-my-meadow\/","title":{"rendered":"One Man Shall Mow My Meadow"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>I\u2019m going through <cite>Rise Again<\/cite>, the sequel to <cite>Rise Up Singing<\/cite>, and in the \u201cBallads & Old Songs\u201d section I came across a song I was unfamiliar with.<\/p>\r\n<p>The first line goes:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>One man shall mow my meadow<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\u2026so I assumed it was going to be one of those old bawdy-euphemism songs.<\/p>\r\n<p>But then the next line was:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>2 men shall gather it together<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\u2026and I started thinking, <i>Oh, it\u2019s one of <em>those<\/em> bawdy-euphemism songs. One man isn\u2019t enough! She needs two! \u2026but, hmm, I\u2019m starting to lose track of the metaphor here, what\u2019s being gathered together?<\/i><\/p>\r\n<p>And then the next line came along:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>2 men, 1 man & 1 more<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>OK, apparently she needs <em>four<\/em> men.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>Shall shear my lambs & ewes & rams<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Um. I feel like this metaphor is getting away from me.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>And gather my gold together<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>\u2026and then I got to the second verse:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>3 men shall mow my meadow \/ 4 men shall gather it\u2026<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>and the third verse:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>5 men shall mow\u2026<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>and I thought <i>OK, I think I had the wrong idea entirely about what kind of song this is.<\/i><\/p>\r\n<hr width=\"25%\" \/>\r\n<p>Eventually I found a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8nAQIQQio2Y\">recording of someone singing it<\/a>.
