Sweet and funny and a bit larger-than-life, with no particular uncertainty about how it\u2019s going to turn out. But I enjoy that sort of thing when it\u2019s done well, as it is here.<\/p>\r\n<p>(Content warning for dead parents as part of character backstory.)<\/p>\r\n<p>I saw one review that criticized the movie for being implausible; I suspect that that reviewer doesn\u2019t watch (or doesn\u2019t like) romcoms, \u2019cause this seemed to me to be no more implausible than any other romcom in the romance-with-famous-people subgenre.<\/p>\r\n<p>I saw another review that criticized the movie for leaving out a bunch of stuff that was in the book; that\u2019s fair, but as someone who hasn\u2019t yet read the book, I didn\u2019t feel like anything was missing. (Well, okay, there was one development early on that felt a little rushed to me, and it wouldn\u2019t surprise me if the book took a bit longer to get to that point; but I didn\u2019t feel like it was a significant problem.)<\/p>\r\n<p>I\u2019m not saying there are no legitimate reasons to dislike it. But for me, it was one of my favorite movies I\u2019ve seen this year.<\/p>\r\n<p>Here\u2019s an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/11\/1193437235\/in-red-white-royal-blue-a-director-centers-true-queer-intimacy-on-screen\">NPR interview with director Matthew L\u00f3pez<\/a> (from August).
