{"id":20816,"date":"2023-09-24T09:09:50","date_gmt":"2023-09-24T16:09:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/?p=20816"},"modified":"2023-09-24T09:09:50","modified_gmt":"2023-09-24T16:09:50","slug":"jason-sanfords-magazine-survey-results-from-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2023\/09\/24\/jason-sanfords-magazine-survey-results-from-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Jason Sanford\u2019s magazine-survey results from 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>In early 2022, Jason Sanford published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/posts\/62782572\">results of his survey about genre magazines<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>I found the last two sections of the summary especially interesting: freeform responses to the questions \u201cWhat could genre magazines and podcasts do to make you financially support them?\u201d and \u201cAny closing thoughts you'd like to share about SF\/F magazines?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Some of the respondents are coming from definitions and paradigms that I find annoying\u2014for example, there are a few comments of the general form (paraphrased) ~\u201cMagazines are dead, I only read the free stuff on websites.\u201d~<\/p>\r\n<p>But I feel like other respondents\u2019 answers could provide some useful anecdata for magazines and podcasts that are thinking about things they could do to increase readership and\/or bring in more financial support.<\/p>\r\n<p>I\u2019m not seeing methodology info in that report (though I may just have missed it); for example, I don\u2019t know how many respondents there were, or how the survey was distributed\/advertised, or anything about the demographics of respondents other than what they volunteered about themselves in some of those free responses. So I wouldn\u2019t put <em>too<\/em> much weight on these responses; I assume that this wasn\u2019t the kind of random-sample survey that professional pollsters do. (And even those come with caveats.)
