{"id":2126,"date":"2004-07-10T19:52:28","date_gmt":"2004-07-11T02:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2004\/07\/10\/2126.html"},"modified":"2004-07-10T19:52:28","modified_gmt":"2004-07-11T02:52:28","slug":"words-easily-misspelled-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2004\/07\/10\/words-easily-misspelled-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Words easily misspelled #12"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I've been saving these up 'til there were enough of them to post:<\/p>\n<p>As Heather noted in a comment to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/logos\/journal\/show-entry.php?Entry_ID=1371\">an entry last August<\/a>, <span class=\"word-as-word\">antidote<\/span> and <span class=\"word-as-word\">anecdote<\/span> are often used in place of each other.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other common misspellings I've been seeing lately, along with some examples of misusage (the asterisk indicates the sentence is wrong).  Some of these are especially tricky because the misspelling is a real word, so spellcheckers won't catch it.  One is even trickier 'cause it's not actually wrong according to the dictionary. :)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"word-as-word\">whisp<\/span> for <span class=\"word-as-word\">wisp<\/span> (but <cite>MW3<\/cite> lists <span class=\"word-as-word\">whisp<\/span> as a valid variant spelling, sigh)<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"word-as-word\">whither<\/span> for <span class=\"word-as-word\">wither<\/span> (as in *&nbsp;\"The plant whithered away\"&#8212;especially confusing because \"whither away?\" is archaic-speak for \"Where ya headed?\")<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"word-as-word\">eek<\/span> for <span class=\"word-as-word\">eke<\/span> (*&nbsp;\"He eeked out a living by fixing shoelaces.\")<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"word-as-word\">in tact<\/span> for <span class=\"word-as-word\">intact<\/span> (*&nbsp;\"The old manuscript was still in tact.\")<\/li>\n<li>This one's just a simple typo, but a very common one: <span class=\"word-as-word\">out<\/span> for <span class=\"word-as-word\">our<\/span>, or vice versa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been saving these up &#8217;til there were enough of them to post: As Heather noted in a comment to&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2126","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-language","category-words-easily-confused"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2126","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2126"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2126\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2126"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2126"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2126"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
