Le&nbsp;Guin wrote an epigraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"stanza\">\n<p>Only in silence the word,<\/p>\n<p>only in dark the light,<\/p>\n<p>only in dying life:<\/p>\n<p>bright the hawk's flight<\/p>\n<p>on the empty sky.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<cite>The Creation of &Eacute;a<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A few years back, Ben Newman set that to music, and the result is one of my very favorite rounds.  Mary Anne mentioned it on the phone just now and it occurred to me that I never linked to Ben's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccs.swarthmore.edu\/users\/01\/bnewman\/songs\/\">songs page<\/a>, nor to the song he calls \"The Creation of Ea\" in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccs.swarthmore.edu\/users\/01\/bnewman\/songs\/music\/CreationOfEa.abc\">ABC format<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccs.swarthmore.edu\/users\/01\/bnewman\/songs\/music\/CreationOfEa.mid\">MIDI format<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sccs.swarthmore.edu\/users\/01\/bnewman\/songs\/music\/CreationOfEa.mp3\">MP3 format<\/a> (with Ben singing all three parts).  I recommend the MIDI version for learning purposes, but the MP3 may give you a sense of how it sounds when sung.  Note that the second part comes in after the second \"only in\"; in other words, the second part sings their first note at the same time that the first part sings the word \"dark.\"<\/p>\n<p>If you want sheet music, download the appropriate <a href=\"http:\/\/staffweb.cms.gre.ac.uk\/~c.walshaw\/abc\/#software\">ABC software<\/a> for your platform&#8212;on the Mac, I prefer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barfly.dial.pipex.com\/\">Barfly<\/a>&#8212;and open the ABC version of the song.  (In case you don't know, <a href=\"http:\/\/staffweb.cms.gre.ac.uk\/~c.walshaw\/abc\/\">ABC<\/a> is a text-only music notation system; Barfly and other ABC programs can convert ABC to standard notation and play the music.)<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the beginning of A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K.
