{"id":271,"date":"2002-01-15T12:57:28","date_gmt":"2002-01-15T20:57:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2002\/01\/15\/271.html"},"modified":"2002-01-15T12:57:28","modified_gmt":"2002-01-15T20:57:28","slug":"mappae-mundi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2002\/01\/15\/mappae-mundi\/","title":{"rendered":"Mappae mundi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mary Anne's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mamohanraj.com\/journal\/show-entry.php?Entry_ID=133\">latest entry<\/a> (\"Looking at these maps makes me want to wander, want to just strap on a backpack and go somewhere no one's ever been, get lost in that wilderness\") was an interesting juxtaposition for me, because this morning while getting ready for work I finished reading \"Down Here in the Garden,\" by Tia V. Travis, a story in the latest Datlow\/Windling <cite>YBF&amp;H<\/cite> about people (specifically the Donner party) getting lost in the wilderness, due to inadequate directions, and horrible things happening to them.  It reinforced my belief in staying home.  :&nbsp;) But I'm glad that there are explorers and adventurers out there; just also glad I'm not one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow reminds me of a Greg Simon song, \"The Great Out There\" (as performed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.susanwerner.com\/\">Susan Werner<\/a>), about an adventurous friend, from the point of view of a less adventurous person:<\/p>\n<p>\"Send an update, Kate, to your old roommate, from your big round world to my small flat state.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.\"<\/p>\n<p>And since my mind is skipping around today (perhaps even more than usual), it also reminds me of a bit from \"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.literature.org\/authors\/carroll-lewis\/the-hunting-of-the-snark\/\">The Hunting of the Snark<\/a>\" that was running through my head the other day:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>He had bought a large map representing the sea,<BR>\nWithout the least vestige of land:<BR>\nAnd the crew were much pleased when they found it to be<BR>\nA map they could all understand.<\/p>\n<p>\"What's the good of Mercator's North Poles and Equators,<BR>\nTropics, Zones, and Meridian Lines?\"<BR>\nSo the Bellman would cry: and the crew would reply<BR>\n\"They are merely conventional signs!<\/p>\n<p>\"Other maps are such shapes, with their islands and capes!<BR>\nBut we've got our brave Captain to thank:<BR>\n(So the crew would protest) \"that he's bought us the best&#8212;<BR>\nA perfect and absolute blank!\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I do like maps, though.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mary Anne&#8217;s latest entry (&#8220;Looking at these maps makes me want to wander, want to just strap on a backpack&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/271","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/5"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=271"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/271\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=271"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=271"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=271"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
