{"id":3528,"date":"2006-05-22T15:04:23","date_gmt":"2006-05-22T22:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2006\/05\/22\/3528.html"},"modified":"2006-05-22T15:04:23","modified_gmt":"2006-05-22T22:04:23","slug":"cowboys-are-frequently-secretl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2006\/05\/22\/cowboys-are-frequently-secretl\/","title":{"rendered":"Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Back around the end of March, I bought Willie Nelson's recording of the catchy gay cowboy song \"<a href=\"http:\/\/phobos.apple.com\/WebObjects\/MZStore.woa\/wa\/viewAlbum?id=121720398&s=143441\">Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly (Fond of Each Other)<\/a>\" from the iTunes Music Store, but somehow didn't listen to it 'til just now, when it came up on the iTunes rotation while I was doing magazine administrative stuff.<\/p>\n<p>It's a great song--fun, charming, a little silly, queer-positive.  Written by Texan singer-songwriter Ned Sublette, who apparently always wanted Nelson to sing it, in 1981; I'm guessing that date probably explains the mild confusion between gender and orientation that the song displays.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Wikipedia <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cowboys_Are_Frequently,_Secretly_Fond_of_Each_Other\">article about the song<\/a>, one of the factors that led to Nelson finally recording and releasing the song was \"the coming out of [Nelson's] friend and tour manager of thirty years, David Anderson\" in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>There's also a sweet and charming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secretcowboys.com\/\">video<\/a> (with a kind of disturbingly ambiguous ending), though the copy on that site is low-quality and I'm guessing illicit.
