{"id":3874,"date":"2007-04-11T21:48:25","date_gmt":"2007-04-12T04:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2007\/04\/11\/3874.html"},"modified":"2007-04-11T21:48:25","modified_gmt":"2007-04-12T04:48:25","slug":"rip-kurt-vonnegut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2007\/04\/11\/rip-kurt-vonnegut\/","title":{"rendered":"R.I.P., Kurt Vonnegut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <cite>New York Times<\/cite> reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/04\/11\/books\/11cnd-vonnegut.html?ex=1333944000&en=fa0903aa5313fc8b&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss\">Kurt Vonnegut died tonight<\/a> at age 84.<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea until I read that obituary that Vonnegut was the author of the sf story \"<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Report_on_the_Barnhouse_Effect\">Report on the Barnhouse Effect<\/a>,\" which had a huge impact on me as a kid; I still remember it pretty clearly, even most of its penultimate sentence, about 30 years after last encountering it. But I hadn't remembered who the author was. I certainly never knew it was Vonnegut's first published story.<\/p>\n<p>I liked a fair tad bit of his other work, too, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway.  I'm sorry to see him go.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect that there will be two things in common among the majority of the articles and blog postings about Vonnegut's death:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They'll mention the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/columnists\/chi-970601sunscreen,0,4664776.column\">Mary Schmich commencement address<\/a> that's widely <a href=\"http:\/\/hotink.com\/schmich.html\">misattributed to Vonnegut<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They'll end with \"So it goes.\"<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times reports that Kurt Vonnegut died tonight at age 84.
