Looks like a small asteroid came awfully close to <a href=\"http:\/\/skyandtelescope.com\/news\/current\/article_641_1.asp\">hitting Earth<\/a> last week, and we didn't even know it was there 'til three days later.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, \"awfully close\" is relative.  It was 120,000 km away, and in some sense talking about counterfactuals in this sort of thing is silly; if it doesn't actually hit, it doesn't much matter how close it gets.  Not like there's a what-if scenario in which some small factor changes whether it hits or not.  But still, it was inside the moon's orbit; that seems close.<\/p>\n<p>And it was too small to do really world-shattering damage; we're not talking an <cite>Armageddon<\/cite>-type scenario.  But still, the article says it would've been equivalent to \"the largest H-bombs\" in amount of damage it did, had it hit.<\/p>\n<p>Kinda scary.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Huh.
