As the song says, \"There are two things money can't buy: one is love, the other is home-grown tomatoes.\"  Yum.<\/p>\n<p>So I'm eating one of them with my macaroni-and-cheese lunch today (people seem to think of both macaroni-and-cheese and peanut-butter sandwiches as kid food, but I eat them both a lot), and it occurred to me that I've never known why tomatoes are also known as <i>love apples.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>So I looked it up.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/cgi-bin\/dictionary?love%20apple\">MW10<\/a> says the etymology is \"probably translation of French <i>pomme d'amour.<\/i>\"<\/p>\n<p>~Oh, goody.  I'm glad we cleared that up.~<\/p>\n<p>So, any French speakers know why tomatoes were called <i>pomme d'amour?<\/i>  (This would be 16th century or earlier.)<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arthur gave me some home-grown tomatoes the other day.
