{"id":706,"date":"2002-11-17T00:48:45","date_gmt":"2002-11-17T08:48:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2002\/11\/17\/706.html"},"modified":"2002-11-17T00:48:45","modified_gmt":"2002-11-17T08:48:45","slug":"heffalump-is-better-than-none","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2002\/11\/17\/heffalump-is-better-than-none\/","title":{"rendered":"Heffalump is better than none"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An early research paper on heffalumps provides a few tantalizing tidbits\n  of information about their care, feeding, and personal habits:<\/p>\n<p>First, the primary mode of heffalump locomotion appears to be &quot;Just lumping\n  along.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>It seems that &quot;[y]ou don't often see them,&quot; which may suggest either that they're\n  rare or that they're sometimes invisible.<\/p>\n<p>The paper indicated that there was some debate over whether string is necessary\n  to lead a heffalump home with. The debate concluded that some heffalumps come\n  if you whistle, and some don't; &quot;[y]ou never can tell with Heffalumps.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The paper also provided some Questions for further study (presented here with\n  a few Annotations by Me):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>What was a Heffalump like?<\/p>\n  <p>Was it Fierce?<\/p>\n  <p><em>Did<\/em> it come when you whistled? And <em>how<\/em> did it come? [I\n    have a feeling this is related to the questions of the creature's gender\n    and sexual\n      orientation.]<\/p>\n  <p>Was it Fond of Pigs at all? [See previous note.]<\/p>\n  <p>If it was Fond of Pigs, did it make any difference <em>what sort of Pig?<\/em> [Presumably\n      an Earth-pig, given the part-aardvark ancestry.]<\/p>\n  <p>Supposing it was Fierce with Pigs, would it make any diffference <em>if the Pig\n      had a grandfather called TRESPASSERS WILLIAM?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I think that's quite enough of that. At least for now.<\/p>\n<p>All this reminds me that once, years ago, the question came up of which Milne\n  character various people were most like. Somehow Beth and Arthur concluded\n  that I was most like Rabbit; I was never very clear on their reasoning. The\n  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.half-asleep.com\/pooh\/interact\/quiz\/quiz.php\">100 Acre Personality\n  Quiz<\/a> suggests that I'm more like Kanga,\n  with perhaps some Owl tendencies.
