{"id":715,"date":"2002-11-21T00:32:04","date_gmt":"2002-11-21T08:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2002\/11\/21\/715.html"},"modified":"2002-11-21T00:32:04","modified_gmt":"2002-11-21T08:32:04","slug":"pampling-the-moose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2002\/11\/21\/pampling-the-moose\/","title":{"rendered":"Pampling the moose"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I got curious about the origin of <span class=\"foreign\">pamplemousse;<\/span> it\n  seemed clear that it came from <span class=\"foreign\">pample<\/span>+<span class=\"foreign\">mousse,<\/span> and\n  so I wondered what <span class=\"foreign\">pample<\/span> meant in French. Babelfish\n  didn't seem to know, so I Googled for more. If the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.mu\/\">Encyclop&aelig;dia\n  Mauritiana<\/a> can be trusted on this point, it turns out that the word is\n  actually a French <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/logos\/words\/lower2\/kkarate.html\">hobson-jobson<\/a>.\n  In much the same way that the French word <span class=\"foreign\">mousseron<\/span> became\n  the English word <span class=\"word-as-word\">mushroom,<\/span> through mishearing\n  and\/or mis-analysis, and Algonquian <span class=\"foreign\">raugroughcun<\/span> became\n  English <span class=\"word-as-word\">raccoon,<\/span> the Tamil word <span class=\"foreign\">bambolmas<\/span> (for\n  a grapefruit-like fruit &quot;imported by the Dutch from Java&quot;) became the French\n  word <span class=\"foreign\">pamplemousse.<\/span> So it actually has nothing\n  to do with mousse at all.<\/p>\n<p>I'm sure you will all sleep better knowing that. I know I will. <\/p>\n<p>By the way, the <cite>Encyclop&aelig;dia Mauritiana<\/cite> page about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.encyclopedia.mu\/Nature\/Geography\/Places\/Pamplemousse.htm\">Royal Botanical Gardens<\/a> also says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>The Royal Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses is the highlight of any visit\n    to the north. These world famous gardens were renamed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam\n    Botanical Gardens in 1988 in honour of the late Prime Minister [but] many\n    locals still refer to them by the former name. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam? Okay, that's better than what I originally thought\n  it said (Seewoogasaur, a very silly pink dinosaur of the late Crezoic), but\n  still.
