{"id":795,"date":"2002-12-28T20:59:39","date_gmt":"2002-12-29T04:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2002\/12\/28\/795.html"},"modified":"2002-12-28T20:59:39","modified_gmt":"2002-12-29T04:59:39","slug":"favorite-sf-character-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/jed\/2002\/12\/28\/favorite-sf-character-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"Favorite sf character poll"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Will points to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/Entertainment776693.html\">article about a poll<\/a> done by <cite><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfx.co.uk\/\">SFX<\/a><\/cite> (a British magazine that claims to be \"the biggest, brightest and boldest science fiction magazine in the world\"); they surveyed readers to determine \"the top 100 SF\/fantasy characters of all time.\"  Presumably it's a TV\/movie magazine, since all the characters in the top 10 are TV and movie characters rather than characters from books:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>Doctor Who<\/li>\n<li>Spike (from <cite>Buffy<\/cite>)<\/li>\n<li>Buffy<\/li>\n<li>John Crichton (from <cite>Farscape<\/cite>)<\/li>\n<li>Aeryn Sun (from <cite>Farscape<\/cite>)<\/li>\n<li>Han Solo<\/li>\n<li>Willow (from <cite>Buffy<\/cite>)<\/li>\n<li>Darth Vader<\/li>\n<li>Angel<\/li>\n<li>Gandalf<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Btw, the magazine site doesn't list the full top 100 but does mention that 84 of the 100 are male.<\/p>\n<p>As Will noted, it would be interesting to see how different such a list would be if done by an American magazine.  I suspect it would depend a great deal on who you asked and (as Will noted) when.  Presumably there'd be <cite>Star Trek<\/cite> characters on the list whenever you did the survey, but which ones would probably vary over time.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, results might also vary based on how you asked the question.  I'm guessing these are \"favorite\" characters rather than, say, \"best portrayed\" or anything like that.<\/p>\n<p>I'm also interested in top 10 written-speculative-fiction characters.
