I was looking for an approximate upper bound on the number of people in a settlement that could reasonably be called a <i>village,<\/i> so I looked up <i>village<\/i> (and then some related terms) in the dictionary:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/cgi-bin\/dictionary?city\">city<\/a>: an inhabited place of greater size, population, or importance than a town or village<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/cgi-bin\/dictionary?town\">town<\/a>: a compactly settled area usually larger than a village but smaller than a city<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/cgi-bin\/dictionary?village\">village<\/a>: a settlement usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/cgi-bin\/dictionary?hamlet\">hamlet<\/a>: a small village<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thank you, <cite>MW10.<\/cite> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/logos\/words\/lower2\/ggostak.html\">The gostak distims the doshes<\/a>.
