A couple of odd things about spam lately:<\/p>\n
First, I've been getting a lot of spam containing cryptic words or random letter-strings, either in the Subject line or the body. For example, one came in this morning with this subject line:<\/p>\n
hierarchicko uindicabant logos-Invest-in-yourself<\/p>\n
Now I can't find the one that consisted entirely of nonsense words. But I did find one that was a fairly normal spam but ended with this:<\/p>\n
bvpwrhfmoomglsmlhifmpgpjstocnpuus<\/p>\n
And then there are the ones that appear to use English words but it's kinda hard to tell what exactly they're getting at, like the one that ended this way:<\/p>\n
\nWhere do you want to go to date me ?<\/p>\n
Serial killer manufacturer ?<\/p>\n
Serial Monica manufacturer ?<\/p>\n
Why are you related to the fishing game ?<\/p>\n
Can you draw a complete outdated map of all \"experiments\" ?<\/p>\n
When will we stop replay tragedy for the nobles, Elvis ?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
I also get mail where I can't decide whether it's spam or not. It sometimes appears to be from random people I've never heard of (last night, I got a birth announcement from a high-school friend who I haven't talked with in years, who's partly changed her name in the interim, and it took me a good two minutes to figure out who it was from); it's sometimes filled with generic phrases that suggest that it's a form letter going out to lots of people; it sometimes has a subject line that could be read as suggesting that it contains a business opportunity; etc.<\/p>\n
Which reminds me to note: if I don't know who you are and you send me email, please use a non-generic subject line, then in the body of the message introduce yourself and mention something specific (such as referring to the content of a particular journal entry). I'm always happy to receive mail, and I sometimes even reply to it (though I often fail to reply even to mail from close friends, so don't be upset if I don't answer), but I feel more comfortable replying if I'm convinced that it's not spam.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
