I have picked a five-letter English word with no repeating letters. (I use American spelling.)

Type a guess that’s also a five-letter English word with no repeating letters, and press Enter. (You can use a physical keyboard or the game’s virtual keyboard.)

For each letter of my secret word, I’ll tell you whether that letter appears anywhere in your word.

For example, if my secret word is SCORE, and you guess GOATS, then I’ll write GOATS under the first and third blanks, because the first and third letters of my word (S and O) are in your guess.

Possible letters: A G O S T (many) A G O S T (many) (many)
  _____ _____ _____ _____ _____
Guesses: GOATS GOATS

I didn’t write GOATS under the other blanks, so you know that none of the letters in GOATS are the second, fourth, or fifth letters of the secret word.

Note for Wordle players: Unlike Wordle, Fives doesn’t tell you whether a letter in your guess is in the same position as a letter in the secret word. It just says “one of the letters in your guess appears in this position in the secret word.”

The virtual keyboard dims the letters that you’ve guessed, so that you can easily see which letters remain unguessed.

Like most online word games, I’ll only pick fairly common words as answers, but you can guess much less common words.

Unlike some other online word games, I may pick plural nouns as answers.
