This was written and mailed shortly before Peter\u2019s 32nd birthday.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p class=\"text-right\">(I love you,\u2026)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">Dear Parents\u2014\u2014<\/p>\r\n<p>Hi\u2014\u2014and thank you!<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cAnd finally, of course, thanks are due to my parents, without whose assistance my production would have been impossible.\u201d (Philip Emmons Isaac Bonewits, concluding the Introduction to his new book, \u201cReal Magic.\u201d Mr. Bonewits is 22 yrs. old, & just graduated last year with a B.A. in MAGIC from U.C. Berkeley\u2026!? (From the last chapter: \u201cAnd, if\u2026 [this] entire book makes absolutely no sense at all to you, ask this question: Is <u>this<\/u> what one of the nation\u2019s best universities is putting out? And if so, <u>who<\/u> is to blame?\u201d))<\/p>\r\n<p>Anyway, thank you for the phone calls, letters & birthday gift offer\u2026 after due consideration, I\u2019ve chosen to gifts I\u2019d appreciate\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>#1: it would please me more than ANYTHING if you\u2019d read & reflect on the enclosed book,<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-center\">\u201cPURSUIT OF LONELINESS\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-center\">(American Culture at the Breaking Point)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-center\">By Phillip Slater\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>If you like, you could consider (t)his book to be a long personal letter from me to you\u2026 It takes a little while to read, but his conversational style makes the reading not too tedious. Marcy just read this copy, and underlined many segments\u2026 I think she underlined those parts most cogent & revelatory to <u>her<\/u>, so it will be interesting for you to see if you \u201cenjoy\u201d the same passages, or others\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>I was unfamiliar with this man\u2019s work, until it was mentioned in my math class on \u201cAutomata\u201d\u2026 I read 20 pg\u2019s of the teacher\u2019s copy in the math library, then ran out & bought a copy\u2026.Today I bought a new copy to send to Paul & Linda\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>Well, #2 gift is, as you\u2019d anticipated, money: but with a twist to make it interesting\u2026 I am sending you two five dollar money orders and, in violation of the instructions, <u>mailing<\/u> you <strike>xxx<\/strike> one copy** of the letter that explains the scheme\u2026 please mail the two money orders, and then type up as many letters as you want to sell (each for $10), with the top name removed & yours added to the bottom. In this way, a.) I discharge my obligation to continue the cycle, and b.) you\u2019d send me $20, & I paid <strike>x<\/strike> $10 out for the letter, so we\u2019d get $10 surplus as a birthday gift, and c.) you\u2019d stand to realize, <u>if<\/u> the chain remained unbroken, each person selling 2, the sum of<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-center\">TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">for each letter you sold\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>**I\u2019m sending one copy so as not to have to go out & copy it\u2014\u2014(we don\u2019t have a typewriter\u2014\u2014thinking of buying us one for my b-day), but we would like to sell <u>each<\/u> of you a letter, 2 x $10 = $20.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>The back of p. 1 of the above is a photocopied page from <cite>The Villager<\/cite>, the local newsletter\/newspaper that Marcy was editing; it\u2019s titled \u201cVietnamese Children\u2019s Song,\u201d but it\u2019s a poem in English about the real enemy being cruelty and hatred and such, reprinted from <cite>Good Times<\/cite>, overlaid with a line drawing of a bald child facing away from the viewer and toward a barbed-wire fence. I strongly suspect that it\u2019s not a real Vietnamese children\u2019s song, but I don\u2019t know for sure. Laing\u2019s psychiatric viewpoints will relate with this experiment, as will <strike>x<\/strike> a treatise i\u2019ve found on topological psychology, and the effects of Johrei on the frequency\/ies of brain-waves\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>Jeffrey went to an international meeting of parapsychologists in Palo Alto, and saw movies of people in USSR \u201cfloating\u201d object across the room with their mind-power\u2026\u2026.!<\/p>\r\n<p>There were also reports by soviet scientists about the photographing of the human aura!!<\/p>\r\n<p>I made an appointment with my \u201cAutomata\u201d professor (full professor, with tenure) John Rhodes, <u>pioneer<\/u> in the field of algebraic theory of finite-state machines (he\u2019s 34 yrs. old, spent 12 yrs. at m.i.t.!), and went to his home and channelled joh-rei energy to his wife & him, & their 3-week-old baby; it was super-nice, the energy-exchange that took place\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-right\">very, sincerely, yours,<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-right\">peter<\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"jed-note\">In margin:<\/span> Looking forward to Nov. 28, Dad! (= Jed\u2019s 3\u2154 birthday, and Joaquin's 1\u00be birthday: 28=1+2+4+7+14, yay! a perfect #!)<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Notes:<\/p>\r\n<dl>\r\n  <dt>Isaac Bonewits<\/dt>\r\n  <dd><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaac_Bonewits\">Bonewits<\/a> went on to become a fairly big name in neopaganism.<\/dd>\r\n  <dt><cite>Pursuit of Loneliness<\/cite><\/dt>\r\n  <dd>A 1970 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/1970\/10\/5\/americathe-pursuit-of-loneliness-boston-beacon\/\"><cite>Harvard Crimson<\/cite> article\/review<\/a> gives a fairly detailed (though not entirely coherent) summary of the book.<\/dd>\r\n  <dt>Selling a letter for $10<\/dt>\r\n  <dd>IIrc, this pyramid-scheme scam claims to be legal\/legit on the grounds that you\u2019re not just sending money to people, you\u2019re buying something (the letter). But that isn\u2019t really true; iIrc, this kind of pyramid scheme is just as illegal as other kinds.<\/dd>\r\n  <dd>I\u2019m a little unclear on the money-order aspect of this particular instance of the scheme; I\u2019m not sure why Peter was sending money orders to G&H, nor who they were supposed to send the money orders to.<\/dd>\r\n  <dd>History does not record whether my grandparents perpetuated the letter-selling scheme or not. But needless to say, nobody in my family made TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS from it.<\/dd>\r\n  <dt>perfect number<\/dt>\r\n  <dd>A <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perfect_number\">perfect number<\/a> is a number that\u2019s equal to the sum of its divisors. As Peter noted, 28 is a perfect number. I don\u2019t know why he addressed that note specifically to George, who I don\u2019t think had any special interest in math.<\/dd>\r\n  <dt>D.J. In 1980, he received a Ph.D. in parapsychology from Berkeley.
