But it refers to a <cite>Time<\/cite> article that was published in January of 1971, and it talks about having become Shaklee \u201cAssistant Supervisors,\u201d which Peter mentioned in an early-1971 letter. So I think I must have mis-guessed about the year; I now think this was 1971, not 1972.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p class=\"text-right\">March 7<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"no-indent\">Dear Grandma & Grandpa\u2014<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-center\">first off\u2014: HAPPY BIRTHDAY,<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-center\">GRANDPA\u2014<\/p>\r\n<p>and many happy returns, etc.\u2014does that <u>really<\/u> mean \u201cmay you get lots of presents\u201d\u2014? I guess it\u2019s more of \u201cmay this day return, and happily, every year\u201d\u2014so some of that, too. (what?) (what?? what what?)<\/p>\r\n<p>Oh and I <u>did<\/u> resolve to write legibly\u2026 I <u>shall<\/u> try.<\/p>\r\n<p>Tomoro I am taking Jed to a play group, have been trying to do it for weeks but so <u>much<\/u> is happening <u>all<\/u> the time. Being Editor of the <u>Villager<\/u> is a big heavy job, lots of time, diminishing rewards, except the Villager itself, a lovely & gratifying price paid for all the effort. I guess.<\/p>\r\n<p>Reading <u>Time\u2019s<\/u> feature on prisons\u2014it\u2019s well worth looking up. (Jan 18, 1971.)<\/p>\r\n<p>Hope you like the Shaklee cosmetics, Grandpa. In each case use only the <u>tiniest<\/u> bit\u2014or maybe a little less. 1\/4\" <u>maximum<\/u> is the length of the ribbon of dentifrice. <strike>xxx<\/strike> The booklet tells you how to care for dentures, too. The <strike>xxx<\/strike> aftershave is really nice because the \u201caroma\u201d goes away soon and you don\u2019t smell like you\u2019ve been to a perfumery for breakfast. They both come in larger sizes (\u201cavailable from your local Shaklee dealers)\u2014We have become Assistant Supervisors, which means very little in terms of our behavior, but more responsibility & slightly <strike>xxx<\/strike> larger bonus checks. It\u2019s all because we signed up some really hotshot salesmen\u2014one, rather, so far, who found others\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>What can I say about Jed\u2019s painting\u2014? It speaks for itself\u2014!<\/p>\r\n<p>The pictures were taken shortly before Joaquins birthday\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>Never did thank you for the Valentine package. (The phone call following was so short & such a surprise\u2026) The underwear was just right. The flannel I have not used yet\u2014thinking about a simple stuffed toy or something\u2026 It seems to be mending & sewing jobs that are a neglected necessity\u2014tho they feel like a luxury with that magnificent creature that came at Christmas!<\/p>\r\n<p>Ah yes, and we got a washing machine. Made by Penneys, 3rd hand, for $50\u2014it\u2019s a really good sturdy noisy and altogether useful critter. Tho it drains into the kitchen sink, which sometimes doesn\u2019t drain. (only when I\u2019m not there!) resulting in interesting visits from neighbors, maintenance men, etc\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p>I\u2019m going to stop this letter now (a friend says my handwriting is quite pretty\u2014too bad she can\u2019t read it) so it can call itself finished, (not because it is, as it really isn\u2019t) (how was that again?) & get their for your birthday. of which have a<\/p>\r\n<p><u>Happy<\/u>(.) Hurray!<\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"jed-note\">Margin note written by Peter:<\/span> P.S.\u2014Hope you\u2019ll find any of the enclosed of interest, & that you\u2019ll enjoy a very happy birthday, Pop!<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"text-right\">love from P., M., J. & J.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Notes:<\/p>\r\n<dl>\r\n  <dt>birthday<\/dt>\r\n  <dd>George\u2019s birthday was March 17, 1912, so if this letter was written in 1971, then George was about to turn 59.<\/dd>\r\n  <dt><cite>Villager<\/cite><\/dt>\r\n  <dd>The neighborhood newsletter that Marcy was editing, as mentioned in her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/pmjj\/1970\/08\/25\/1970-august-25-letters-from-marcy-and-peter-to-gh\/\">August, 1970<\/a> letter.<\/dd>\r\n  <dt>prisons<\/dt>\r\n  <dd><cite>Time<\/cite> magazine\u2019s cover story for its January 18, 1971 issue was \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/subscriber\/article\/0,33009,942467,00.html\">The Law: The Shame of the Prisons<\/a>.\u201d Quote from near the beginning of the article: \u201cPublic concern is rooted in the paradox that Americans have never been so fearful of rising crime, yet never so ready to challenge the institutions that try to cope with it. [\u2026] a growing number of citizens view prisons as a new symbol of unreason, another sign that too much in America has gone wrong.\u201d The article ends by suggesting that 1971 might be \u201cthe year when something may finally get done\u201d about American prisons. I find it very legible; usually only about one or two words per letter that I have any trouble reading.
