It&#8217;s not my very favorite Mary Renault, which is The Mask of Apollo, but it&#8217;s probably next favorite. It&#8217;s amazing how much I liked the physical daring of Theseus, when I was such a timid child. Well, not timid, and again it isn&#8217;t particularly amazing that a timid child would like to lose himself in an action-hero fantasy. Particularly when the action hero is smallish, and although powerfully built, wins primarily through application of keen intelligence to, well, thumping people. And animals. And animal-people.
