Given that citizenship is (essentially) irrevocable, how do the responsibilities of citizenship apply? And what are the moral responsibilities of citizenship?\n\n
Is it helpful to talk about 'good citizens'? Is it helpful to use the term 'citizen' to indicate somebody who fulfils their moral obligation (in the opinion of the user), or does that unreasonably marginalize those whose views on those moral obligations differ from the speaker?\n\n
And what about that tendency to marginalize? I always get upset when I hear talk contrasting \"politicians\" and \"people\" as if politicians were some other, alien form of life. I don't want to contrast \"rebels\" and \"citizens\" in that way—but I do want to contrast a view that emphasizes exclusion from the body politic with one that dives in.
