{"id":20487,"date":"2021-05-18T10:17:09","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T15:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/vardibidian\/?p=20487"},"modified":"2021-05-18T10:17:09","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T15:17:09","slug":"updating-for-godot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/vardibidian\/2021\/05\/18\/updating-for-godot\/","title":{"rendered":"Updating for Godot"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>An update on the <cite>Waiting for Godot<\/cite> audition I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/vardibidian\/2021\/05\/16\/nature-is-healing-now-help-me-up\/\">mentioned yesterday<\/a>: they did not, in fact, ask me to lie on the floor and moan for help whilst people read Didi and Gogo\u2019s lines.\r\n<p>They did offer me the part, though. So, barring some terrible shift in the pandemic recovery, Your Humble Blogger will be rehearsing through June and performing in July, on stage, with an audience in the house. Pretty exciting stuff. The last time I performed for an audience in person was two years ago today. I haven\u2019t gone that long between shows since I started doing theater again more than fifteen years ago, and while I have done a couple of on-line readings, I was starting to really miss the stage.\r\n<p>I believe I was the only one who auditioned for the part. I don\u2019t know for sure, but I was certainly the only one in the building when the audition began, and I didn\u2019t see anyone coming in when I left. I imagine that a bunch of people are still hesitant about engaging in theater. Some aren\u2019t fully vaccinated yet, some won\u2019t be for a while, some can\u2019t be at all. Some people feel that it\u2019s still too risky even if everyone is fully vaccinated (I think the cast is fully vaccinated, except the Boy who I believe has not yet been cast). Some people may feel wary about investing a lot of time at this point, since the possibility exists of another spike and another lockdown and another abandoned show. I was hesitant, myself, and nearly decided not to go out, for some vague combination of all of those reasons for \u201ccaution\u201d.\r\n<p>And, of course, a bunch of people may just not like <cite>Waiting for Godot<\/cite>, which is perfectly reasonable. I admire it, myself, although I think it (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/vardibidian\/2006\/10\/19\/beckett-on-film\/\">I\u2019ve said about Samuel Beckett\u2019s plays generally<\/a>) is more fun for the actors than the audience. I expect I will enjoy playing Pozzo, whatever the audience winds up thinking.
