I am singing to you\r\n
Soft as a man with a dead child speaks;\r\n

     Under the sun\r\n
Are sixteen million men,\r\n
Chosen for shining teeth,\r\n
Sharp eyes, hard legs,\r\n
And a running of young warm blood in their wrists.\r\n

     And a red juice runs on the green grass;\r\n
And a red juice soaks the dark soil.\r\n
And the sixteen million are killing\u2026 and killing\r\n
          and killing.\r\n

     I never forget them day or night:\r\n
They beat on my head for memory of them;\r\n
They pound on my heart and I cry back to them,\r\n
To their homes and women, dreams and games.\r\n

     I wake in the night and smell the trenches,\r\n
And hear the low stir of sleepers in lines\u2014\r\n
Sixteen million sleepers and pickets in the dark:\r\n
Some of them long sleepers for always,\r\n

Some of them tumbling to sleep to-morrow for always,\r\n
Fixed in the drag of the world's heartbreak,\r\n
Eating and drinking, toiling\u2026 on a long job of\r\n
