Some ideas for the Tohu-Bohu book club. That’s what I need, some ideas for the Tohu-Bohu book club. Y’all remember that the first meeting of the Tohu-Bohu book club is this weekend, right? We’re discussing the introduction and first chapter of Better Together: Restoring the American Community<\/I><\/a>, and planning a chapter a week after that.\n

I’ve never been in a book club, nor (as you may well infer) have I ever facilitated a book club meeting. I’ve no idea how these things work. Nor do I have any clear idea of what I want to get out of the thing. So anyone who wants to take over, please do.\n

If not, here’s what my plan is right now. I’ll write up a few questions I have about the introduction, places where either I disagree with the authors, or where I’m not sure I understand what the authors mean, or places where there’s an inference which seems obvious to me, but that the authors don’t make. Gentle Readers can answer as they like, or can ask other questions. If there seem to be two or more topics getting crossed up, I’ll try to start a new note for each.\n

Unless y’all object, I’m going to write as if each Gentle Reader has a copy on the desk. On the other hand, if you haven’t read it, but want to talk, go right ahead. I don’t want to do a précis of each chapter, though. I mean, if anyone else does, let me know and I’ll post it. Otherwise, just like in seminar, people who haven’t done the reading will have to use their wits.\n

Finally, if you are reading along but don’t feel like you have any comment, please please please please please<\/I> please please please please let me know. I’m feeling already as if this was too ambitious for my half-dozen readers. Anyway, I’m not trying for anything definitive, or anything rigorous, even. If there’s a bit that reminds you of what your Uncle Dave said to that street vendor that one time, tell the story. And you certainly don’t have to agree, either with Your Humble Blogger or with Mssrs. Putnam, Feldstein, et al.\n
