{"id":2502,"date":"2004-12-16T19:09:58","date_gmt":"2004-12-17T00:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/vardibidian\/2004\/12\/16\/2502.html"},"modified":"2018-03-12T16:47:28","modified_gmt":"2018-03-12T21:47:28","slug":"book-report-voices-from-the-fe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/vardibidian\/2004\/12\/16\/book-report-voices-from-the-fe\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Report: Voices from the Federal Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I picked up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisc.edu\/wisconsinpress\/books\/2424.htm\"><I>Voices from the Federal Theatre<\/I><\/a> from the library shelf because I&#8217;m interested in the <a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/ammem\/fedtp\/fthome.html\">Federal Theatre<\/a>. I didn&#8217;t realize that it was an attempt to do a Studs Terkel book on the topic, and although it isn&#8217;t very successful at that, it does interview the man himself. I hadn&#8217;t known that he was involved in the Federal Theatre; I forget that he was an actor at all.\n<p>I also learned that Jules Dassin was in the Federal Theatre. I hadn&#8217;t known much about him at all, really, and I just saw <I>Topkapi<\/i> a week or two ago (now that&#8217;s a strange movie). It turns out Mr. Dassin came out of the Yiddish theater, which is not terribly surprising, I suppose. Considering how fascinating I find that period in American theater, I know very little about it, really. I&#8217;ve never read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibdb.com\/production.asp?ID=12073\"><I>Conjur Man Dies<\/I><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibdb.com\/production.asp?ID=12232\"><I>It Can&#8217;t Happen Here<\/I><\/a>.
