{"id":10857,"date":"2008-01-07T10:22:48","date_gmt":"2008-01-07T18:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/neology\/2008\/01\/07\/mulligrubs.html"},"modified":"2008-01-07T10:22:48","modified_gmt":"2008-01-07T18:22:48","slug":"mulligrubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2008\/01\/07\/mulligrubs\/","title":{"rendered":"mulligrubs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/jed\/2003\/12\/01\/1590.html#comment-1852\">comment on a journal entry<\/a> a few years back, Sarah P introduced me to the term \"mullygrubs,\" which turns out to be an alternate spelling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwidewords.org\/weirdwords\/ww-mul1.htm\">mulligrubs<\/a>, which Quinion defines as \"A state of depression or low spirits\" and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/speak\/words\/trackthatword\/ttw\/?i=1243\">Dictionary of American Regional English defines<\/a> as (among other things) \"A condition of despondency or ill temper.\"<\/p>\n<p>It can also refer to a stomach ache or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.englishforums.com\/English\/Mullygrubs\/vvlmm\/Post.htm\">a particular kind of ball in cricket<\/a>.  Apparently the word appeared (among other places) in Steinbeck's <cite>Travels with Charley<\/cite>.<\/p>\n<p>Quinion also mentions the word \"megrims\"; a megrim was a migraine, but \"megrims\" could mean just general low spirits. I'd heard that before, but had forgotten it.
