{"id":12918,"date":"2010-04-16T10:20:54","date_gmt":"2010-04-16T17:20:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/neology\/2010\/04\/16\/comma-importance-of.html"},"modified":"2010-04-16T10:20:54","modified_gmt":"2010-04-16T17:20:54","slug":"comma-importance-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2010\/04\/16\/comma-importance-of\/","title":{"rendered":"Comma, importance of"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Back in March, I came across this AP headline:<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5h7X770NN4z6thqb1fUKGWq4O8pawD9EF1PS00\">More than math, reading important<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>I read it as saying that reading was more important than math, but the article is about attempts to \"broaden the focus [of education] beyond math and reading.\" So I started to write an entry here to make fun of the headline for having nothing to do with the article body.<\/p>\n<p>And then I realized that I'd misread the headline.<\/p>\n<p>It's using the common headline technique of replacing an \"and\" with a comma. So it really meant that more topics than math and reading are important.<\/p>\n<p>So it's a perfectly reasonable headline for the article, except for the ease of misreading it.
