{"id":13454,"date":"2010-11-28T13:31:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-28T21:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/neology\/2010\/11\/28\/sipdis-and-noforn.html"},"modified":"2018-01-15T16:32:57","modified_gmt":"2018-01-16T00:32:57","slug":"sipdis-and-noforn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2010\/11\/28\/sipdis-and-noforn\/","title":{"rendered":"SIPDIS and NOFORN"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Just came across a couple of terms I hadn't encountered before in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2010\/nov\/28\/us-embassy-cable-leak-diplomacy-crisis\">article about leaked US diplomatic memos<\/a>: SIPDIS (applied to items for DIStribution on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SIPRNet\">SIPRNet<\/a>, the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network) and NOFORN (indicating that no foreigners (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Classified_information_in_the_United_States#Unclassified\">except perhaps some British and Australian people<\/a>) should see the item thus described).<\/p>\r\n<p>The US State Department provides a PDF describing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/89284.pdf\">When and How to Use SIPDIS<\/a> (see also a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2010\/nov\/28\/siprnet-america-stores-secret-cables\"><cite>Guardian<\/cite> article on SIPRNet<\/cite><\/a>), and the Federation of American Scientists supplies a PDF of an interesting 2005 memo about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/othergov\/dod\/noforn051705.pdf\">correct use of NOFORN<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>I know that governmental abbreviations and terminology can often be cryptic, and that there are thousands of such terms out there; I have no interest in posting all of the publicly known ones here.
