{"id":16319,"date":"2006-03-29T11:49:18","date_gmt":"2006-03-29T19:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/neology\/2006\/03\/29\/fasnacht-and-paczki-1.html"},"modified":"2006-03-29T11:49:18","modified_gmt":"2006-03-29T19:49:18","slug":"fasnacht-and-paczki-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2006\/03\/29\/fasnacht-and-paczki-1\/","title":{"rendered":"fasnacht and paczki"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A \"<a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/advice\/ref\/ency\/terms\/6441.asp\">fasnacht<\/a>\" is a \"yeast-raised potato pastry that's deep-fried like a doughnut [.&nbsp;.&nbsp;.] originally made and served on Shrove Tuesday to use up the fat that was forbidden during Lent.\" (Fasnacht is also a name for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amishnews.com\/featurearticles\/easter.htm\">Shrove Tuesday<\/a>, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fasnacht.ch\/?pm_1=21&amp;mid=21\">carnival in Basel<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>It's kind of like an Amish version of a beignet, or a <a href=\"http:\/\/home.comcast.net\/~osoono\/ethnicdoughs\/paczki\/paczki.htm\">paczek<\/a> (apparently pronounced \/'poUn tSEk\/) (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpl.hp.com\/personal\/Evan_Kirshenbaum\/IPA\/english.html\">ASCII IPA<\/a> for pronunciation key).  Paczki (plural of paczek) (pronounced \/'p@ntS ki\/) are \"traditional deep fried pastries (something like jelly doughnuts).\"<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that there's a remarkable variety of <a href=\"http:\/\/home.comcast.net\/~osoono\/ethnic-doughs.htm\">fried dough variants around the world<\/a>, from andagi in Okinawa to zeppole in Italy. Fat, sugar, and carbs--what's not to like? (I know, not all of them are sweet.
