{"id":16361,"date":"2006-01-27T22:53:53","date_gmt":"2006-01-28T06:53:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kith.org\/journals\/neology\/2006\/01\/27\/mile.html"},"modified":"2006-01-27T22:53:53","modified_gmt":"2006-01-28T06:53:53","slug":"mile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2006\/01\/27\/mile\/","title":{"rendered":"mile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Somehow it never occurred to me before (unless I've forgotten) to wonder about the etymology of the word \"mile.\"<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adamroberts.com\/\">Adam Roberts<\/a>'s novel <cite>On<\/cite>, there's a moment when a character learns the meaning of a foreign word, \"mile,\" as something like \"thousands of arm-lengths.\"  (Don't have the book handy for exact quote.)<\/p>\n<p>Which immediately (because of the interesting linguistic context in which that passage appeared) led me to wonder if \"mile\" was derived from \"thousand\" in the real world.
