{"id":17286,"date":"2018-03-26T09:47:52","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T16:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/?p=17286"},"modified":"2018-03-26T09:47:52","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T16:47:52","slug":"not-we","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kith.org\/words\/2018\/03\/26\/not-we\/","title":{"rendered":"Not We"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>I just read an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctorwhotv.co.uk\/what-if-eccleston-had-returned-for-50th-56889.htm\/\">article about <cite>Doctor Who<\/cite><\/a> in which former showrunner Steven Moffat referred to \u201cthe Not-We audience.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Turns out that <i><a href=\"http:\/\/tardis.wikia.com\/wiki\/Not_we\">Not We<\/a><\/i> (with various capitalizations and punctuations) is a term used by <cite>Doctor Who<\/cite> fandom to refer to people who are casual watchers of the show, or to \u201canyone who is not an obsessive <cite>Doctor Who<\/cite> fan\u201d whether they watch the show or not.<\/p>\r\n<p>Which is kinda funny to me, given that I\u2019ve been a fan of the show since the early 1980s but have never encountered this term before.<\/p>\r\n<p>Speaking of the word <i>kinda<\/i>, it turns out that <i>Not We<\/i> \u201cderives from the Not-We, a group of outsiders seen in [the 1982 episode titled] <cite>Kinda<\/cite>.\u201d I almost certainly saw that episode at the time, but I have no memory of it.
